The structure is so called since it was first manufactured in a place called Quonset Point in a village called Davisville in Rhode Island. Steel gives robustness and flexibility to these structuresFurther some also use perforated sheets of steel so that it can be easily bend and become still lighter Lately Quonset hut producers have used PVC and quite successfully so because of the low maintenance cost. The first customers of this structure were interestingly the US Navy which was looking for a resilient and versatile building structure to cater their immediate needs to harbor safely their arms, soldiers and other supplies during the Second World War. The advantages were many including mobility and easy construction. Most importantly the structure is weatherproof.
